Wedding Napkins

My son who lives in Japan recently got married. Due to covid travel restrictions there was no wedding ceremony with family and friends (that will come later when worldwide travel is again possible) but I still wanted to give them a gift to celebrate the occasion. I decided to weave a set of napkins that I thought might be pretty, yet functional.

I searched Handwoven Magazine extensively for a simple but elegant design and found what I was looking for in an article entitled, “Getting Together placemats and napkins” by Sandee Jaastad (Handwoven Magazine, May/June 2002, p. 56-58). The project resources suggested 10/2 unmercerized cotton. I experimented with this weight yarn but found it difficult to sew mitered corners due to the bulkiness of the resulting fabric. After several trials I decided to use 10/2 mercerized cotton from Lunatic Fringe as warp and 16/2 Maurice Brassard Orlec from the Eugene Textile Center.

The combination of yarns produced a beautiful fabric with a slight sparkle!

The lighter weight material allowed me to sew some very nice, mitered corners. A YouTube video by the Birch Cottage entitled “How to Sew a Napkin with Mitered Corners-the EASY way” was a huge help in producing those nice clean corners.
